Story

The Max Evans Shropshire Cycle. Just before Christmas 2009 I lost my son Maxwell (Max pictured left with his grandfather) to meningococcal septicaemia a form of meningitis. Since Max passed away I have become increasingly aware of the presence this disease has and how dangerous it is once in the system. It is a disease we all carry among us everyday but are not affected as our body's build a natural immunity to it. It poses most of a threat too the young and the elderly, once in there systems it attacks the blood cells and within minutes can result in death . There are no easy ways of spotting the disease as the symptoms are often mistaken for flu like one's. It is currently the biggest killer in 0 to 5 year old children in the United Kingdom leaving those lucky enough to survive with loss of limbs and severe brain damage. There are 3 strains of meningitis including the meningococcal septicaemia but only a vaccination for one of those strains. Since then myself and my family have been working together to raise the awareness of this tragic disease. Now Max's godfather (Shane Richards) and I will be cycling around the Midlands and North Wales in order to raise money which will not only help to find a vaccination but to support other family's who have been affected by the disease. We will be setting off on the 7th of September covering a distance of 1000 miles stopping in various different places out and around the Midlands. We would be very grateful if you could contribute something to this very worth while cause, all proceeds from the event will go to the meningitis trust. I would to take this opportunity to thank you for reading this letter and it is your support and contributions that enable us to raise money to fight this terrible disease. For anymore information please contact me on 07780823166. Darts Fundraiser. On Sunday the 28th of March 2010 there will be a charity event taking place at Oddfellows in Wellington, there will be a knockout darts competition and a promise auction with all the proceeds going to the meningitis trust. The event will start at 4pm with last entries for the darts taken at 3.30pm, entries cost £2 per entry. There have been many fantastic donations made already so thank you to those people. Will be a good fun afternoon for all ages while making a contribution to a very worth while cause, for anymore information please contact Russell on either of the above numbers. I must say thank you to all that supported us at the darts fundraiser it was a great success and a huge thank you to Oddfellows in Wellington for letting us hold the event there and for all the support they have not only given but are continuing to give also thank you to the people that have donated so far and please feel free to email me any time if you wish to know more my email is 69russ69@live.co.uk. Sunday 20th June 2010. Training going well at the moment, have recently stepped everything up a gear as September is fast approaching. Have started to do longer journeys when i can now as well as the gym work, I cycled to Barmouth last Thursday which was around 80miles in total was a good run and have just got back from walking 12 miles and I'm about to jump on the bike and do another 35miles now so its all taking shape. As for the ride itself most of the bed and breakfasts are booked now the route is complete and if you require any information regarding days and times we will be in a town near you please get in contact on the above number or email me. I would also like to say a massive thank you to Pearce Cycles in Ludlow who have very kindly donated us two new bicycles to do the event on, also to the printimpress at Wellington for helping with the shirt printing and offering to do some photographs of the event. Now I have been asked recently by people if they could join us for a few miles the answer is yes, for example if you were interested in doing 10 miles with us I could get you all the materials necessary so that you can get your own sponsors and any money you raise will be put to overall total of the event so please get intouch it doesn't matter if you want to do 1 mile or 50 miles every penny you make will help make the difference. 5th August 2010. Only just over 5 weeks to go now getting nerves are kicking in abit but the training is going well had a minor set back on the 5th of July I got knocked off my cycle by a hit and run car which put me in hospital but I have managed with persistance to recover and get myself back fit in a short time so im very happy with that donations are coming in thick and fast so thankyou again to everyone who has donated so far. We are currently after as many people to come down to the square in Shrewsbury as possible to see us off on the 7th of September and also to help us fundraise there on the day we will be there from 8.30 and will be setting off around 10am from there so if you have some time please pop down and lend a hand for the cause. As i have said before if anyone wants to know when we will be coming to a town near you please get in touch and i can give you a date and now an eta for your town or village. 20th August 2010. Just over 2 weeks to go now everything coming together nicely, had no idea when we decided to do this ride how much planning and organising there would be, I would like to say a big thankyou to mobile bicycle mechanic go cycling in cressage for servicing the bike.
